Today is a very special day for us as we take the next step in our creative journey, and bring to the forefront our gifted name Nōku te Ao Capital E.
Since our grand opening in Te Ngākāu Civic Square in 1992, we have had many different names and looks over the years. From ‘Capital Discovery Place’, a science centre and technology museum for tamariki, to ‘Capital E’ where we focused on broadening creative experiences for tamariki in the capital city. We are thrilled to enter a new chapter as Nōku te Ao Capital E.
Our gifted name means “the world is mine,” or more colloquially, “the world is my oyster”.
Our mission is to be a modern-day whare tapere for tamariki in Pōneke, where we harness the power of play to ignite creativity, build confidence, and foster resilience in today’s tamariki and rangatahi, preparing them for the future.
Our refreshed brand draws from the traditions of whai string games, weaving together stories of exploration, creativity, and discovery.
Our new name and look are an exciting first step in our move to Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui, Wellington’s new central library, in early 2026.
