We have all the instruments and technology you need to make your own soundtrack and music video at SoundHouse NZ. All you need is your imagination. You don't even need to be a musician!

This sophisticated sound and video production suite offers young people nationwide the opportunity to explore the extraordinary possibilities in combining music with technology. The studio holds a network of computer music workstations complete with piano-style midi control keyboards, all linked to a teaching station with data projection facilities.

School groups attend SoundHouse™ during the school term for an inspiring creative experience that fulfils objectives in the New Zealand Arts (Music) and Technology documents as well as covering a range of Essential Skills outlined in the New Zealand Curriculum Framework.

The public enjoys the fun and creative technology experiences on weekends and during the holidays.

SoundHouse™ NZ DMV Scholarship Programme - This scholarship is a chance for talented and passionate student singer/songwriters to further their musical skills. Accessing the latest in multi-media technology and industry experts, DMV Scholarship students write and record their own music, shoot music videos and perform and tour original music. A perfect opportunity for students looking to take their original music to the next level. DMV Scholarship is by audition only. Contact the SoundHouse Co-ordinator .

School Programmes - We offer 6 different programmes catering for a wide range of ages and abilities. The sessions are 2 hours or 3.5 hours, depending on the programme.

Movie Soundtrack Designer for a Day - 2 Hour Session

Years 5+

Dive into the world of big screen producers and create a movie soundtrack. Using the latest audio software, students mix sound effects with musical instruments to design a track that brings their movie alive!

 Watch the new generation of Oscar-winning sound designers emerge!

 Students Learn

  • Audio mixing techniques
  • Role of sound effects in film
  • How musical concepts eg rhythm, instrumentation support film vision
  • How to synchronise sound to vision
  • Using stereo image in track production

Music Producer for a Day - 2 Hour Session

Years 4+

Use the industry favourite ‘loop-based’ Acid software to produce a musical recording. Rock, pop, hip-hop, jazz, rhythm & blues… it's the students' choice!

 

Everyone’s a musician!

 

Students learn

  • choosing instrumentation to fit to a style
  • using musical form to achieve a well-structured piece
  • applying audio effects
  • manipulating tempo and pitch

Sound-Story Creator for a Day- 2 Hour Session

Years 3-4+

Add WOW to your story using the awesome digital effects of Sony Vegas software. Students write their own stories in class, record them live in the SoundHouse™ and then transform them using sound effects, digital tools and advanced techniques such as audio panning and fading for extra impact.

Students learn

  • narration and character portrayal
  • managing audio levels in recording
  • using sound to enhance and add reality
  • advanced techniques such as panning and fading
  • how to enhance vocal recordings

Digital Storyteller for a Day - 3.5 Hour Session

Years 7+

Welcome to My Life! Students bring together a range of 'found' and prepared images, words, sounds and thoughts to express who they are and where they fit in the world. They make all the artistic decisions to get the right look, sound, feel and music to support their visual concept.

 

My Vision. My Voice . . .

 

Students learn

  • using visual and musical language in screen context
  • clip editing
  • creating the right soundtrack to support the vision
  • role of text in video presentation
  • Arrange and manipulate images to inform and challenge the viewer
  • Enhance critical thinking about screen images
  • use of audio mixing to produce clarity and balance

Music Video Producer for a Day - 3.5 Hour Session

Years 7+

Make a music video and discover digital video editing! Students choose video and audio footage from our SoundHouse™ library. Then with easy-to-use and exciting software they produce a clip and artistically develop their video editing skills.

 

With this virtual world of sound and image at their fingertips your students can create multi-media masterpieces!

 

Students learn:

  • how to choose music by style as a basis for video
  • Synchronising edited video clips with music tracks
  • Text manipulation to support a theme
  • Use of video effects

Advertising Executive for a Day - 3.5 Hour Session

Years 6+

As seen on TV! Now students have the job of producing an advertisement. Using supplied film footage and creating their own music as a soundtrack, students make a TV ad. They make all the artistic decisions, choosing the right look, feel; the right sounds and music to support their visual concept and communicate their message..

 

The big decisions are in your hands!

 

Students learn

  • using visual and musical language in advertising context

  • creating the right soundtrack to support the vision
  • role of text in advertising
  • Arrange and manipulate images to persuade and convince the viewer

HOLIDAY PROGRAMMES

In our awesome holiday experience, you could have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be involved in firstly writing, arranging, recording and then producing your own song to CD.We run a range of holiday activities, from introductory half-day sessions to full week-long creative workshops.

These programmes fill up fast, so if you want to be constantly updated on any Holiday Programme information, please register your details to request further information to request further infomation.

Get Your Group On CD

All School-Aged Groups

We can record and master your group's material onto CD to use for:

  • Fundraising
  • A demo for submitting to competitions, radio stations and/or record companies.
  • Giving away as a special gift.
  • Showing off to your friends.
  • Use as a permanent school record.

This is ideal for smaller groups, such as Choirs and vocalists e.g. Barbershop, Kapa Haka, smaller instrumental ensembles and by special arrangement, school rock/pop bands. Bookings and costs by arrangement.

Price: Education Sessions: $10.00 per student
Wellington Schools Subsidy 25%: Wellington City Council and Wellington Museums Trust subsidise Wellington schools, therefore reducing the price to only $7.50.
